PA’s
LETTERS: A Lifetime of Hebrew Literature
Pa’s Letters is a selection of
the prolific correspondence and articles by Dr. Abraham
Meir Wigser (1898-1979), a respected physician in Cincinnati,
Ohio, compiled by his daughter Orah Wigser Buck. The excerpts
are chosen from her extensive private collection, as well
as letters in Hebrew and English found at the Genazim
(Tel Aviv Municipal Archives), Hebrew Union College, Jewish
Institute of Religion, and the Jacob Rader Marcus Center
of the American Jewish Archives. The correspondence spans
forty years, from 1934 to 1974, during which Dr. Wigser
encouraged, supported and promoted the growth of Hebrew
culture in the United States and Israel. Following Kristallnacht
and the tragic Torah and book burnings in Europe, Dr.
Wigser passionately encouraged the resurrection of Hebrew
books and literature. He was a major supporter of the
rebirth of the Hebrew language, as hundreds of letters
to Jews in America, Palestine and other countries attest.
His articles and correspondence with writers and editors
reflect the events of Israel’s struggle for existence
and the beginning of the American Israel Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC). Pa’s Letters mirrors the growth
of Hebrew culture in the United States and gives valuable
insight into the social history of the times.
